Abstract

The study was conducted in East Arsi Zone. It is situated some 165 km in the south east of Addis Ababa with the objectives of evaluating a benefit of integrated poultry-fish-horticulture production and its contribution to food security. Poultry breeds of Rhode Island which was dual purpose for egg and meat production, fish species of Oreochromis niloticus and different varieties of horticultural crops (Bombe red onion (Allium cepa), variety of Malkashola Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and (Brassica oleracea) Cabbage) were integrated and important data that needs to assess the benefitsof the system were collected for the period of November 2009 to August 2011. All costs and incomes of the production systems were calculated and the profit were driven from this parametershe integration of poultry, fish and crops increased overall production intensity as compared to the non integrated ones. Both poultry manure and wastes had value as nutrient inputs to fish and the water used for fish production acts for fertigation of horticultural production. Generally, the result indicated that the total incomes of the farmer from the integrated farming system were high and the role of contribution towards food security was high.
