Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of leadership style and coaching behavior on athletes' performance at Debre Birhan University Athletic Clubs. A cross-sectional study design was used. A total of 43 individuals, consisting of 22 male and 19 female athletes and 2 coaches, were included in the study. The study was conducted using a structured demographic questionnaire, the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS), to examine the leadership style (Yukkelson et al. , 2010) and the coaching behavior scale (Weinberg & Goul, 2014). The regression analysis was used to show the effect of coaching style and leadership style on athlete performance. The results of the regression analysis showed that there are no statistically significant relationships between any of the independent variables (physical training and planning, mental preparation, competition strategies, democratic leadership, situational consideration, and autocratic leadership) and athletic performance. As a result, the study found that specific coaching behaviors, such as autonomy-supportive behaviors and positive feedback, were associated with lower levels of athlete burnout, which, in turn, can positively influence performance outcomes. Therefore, coaches should consider providing coaches with training opportunities to develop their coaching behavior and learn to adapt their coaching for better athlete engagement and performance enhancement.
