Abstract

Aquaculture is  the  cultivation of  aquatic  organisms under controlled conditions. This paper describes the  aquatic environment in relation to  improved husbandry techniques  such as maintenance of water   quality,  feed  formulation,  aquaculture  system  designs  and species selection. The  husbandry of aquatic animals requires stress- free environment and good nutrition, which maximize the comfort of the animals that result in good performance. An understanding of the physiology  of  response to  environmental  stress  and  the  degree of change to which fish can adapt through  these mechanisms is important to a definition of the  aquaculture conditions required for optimum fish health.  It   discusses  some  of  the   theories  in  relation  to  culture- associated stress that result in the occurrence of diseases and outlines methods of overcoming problems arising from intensification with particular emphasis on finfish culture.
