A Study on Clarias gariepinus Abundance, Economic Patterns, and Social Acceptance in the River Jemma Basin, Ethiopia

This study examined the economic patterns and consumer acceptance of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in the northern region of Ethiopia, focusing on the River Jemma Basin. Data collection involved both qualitative and quantitative methods, including interviews, questionnaires, focus group discussions, and observations with producers, stakeholders, and consumers.


Results revealed limited abundance of Clarias gariepinus in the study area. Fishers predominantly used fish poison and explosives for catfish capture, but poor gear regulation and fishery management practices contributed to overfishing and reduced availability. Despite this, catfish remained popular among consumers due to its meat content, despite higher prices and limited market supply. However, the irregular availability of catfish led to uneven economic patterns for the species.


The decline in catfish numbers over the years suggests the need for further investigation into underlying causes. To conserve the species, studying the reasons behind this decline and promoting aquaculture production could offer a sustainable solution considering the limited availability of catfish from natural sources.
